I think I just come from a different philosophical place--people with genuine "internal motivation" don't need the threat of being fired

It's not a threat, just being honest, as you said. If the person *is* motivated, there's no problem. If they aren't, no time is wasted.

I also was warned that a couple of guys, they were up to no good, starting making trouble in SEER's neighborhood!

I know that's not a slam on philly!
